On Saturday, August 24, Shikhar Dhawan, one of the most successful cricketers in India, announced his retirement from both international and domestic cricket. The southpaw opener, who led Punjab Kings in IPL 2024, began the season quite brightly as he scored 152 runs in five matches, including an invigorating half-century against Lucknow Super Giants. However, a shoulder injury ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament, and after there was a glimmer of hope for a comeback, Dhawan eventually called it a day, three months after the IPL ended.

The swashbuckling opener took to social media to break the news to the world. He claims he is at peace with his decision but does admit that sometimes it feels unreal to digest the fact that he won’t be wearing the Indian jersey again. Reflecting on his glittering career, Dhawan highlighted the moving on and embracing of change.

“It’s time to close this chapter and move on in life, and that’s why I am formally announcing my retirement from international and domestic cricket. Though I am leaving with peace in my heart because I know that I have played for so long for India. I tell myself not to feel sad that you will not play for India anymore, but be happy that you played for your country,” Shikhar Dhawan shared in the emotional video message.

Soon after his announcement, Dhawan was showered with a lot of congratulatory messages from teammates and former cricketers. Of them, Wasim Jaffer pointed out Dhawan’s massive contributions in ICC tournaments. According to him, the Delhi-born cricketer never got his due for the same. He was indeed brilliant on the big stage. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, he has compiled 412 runs in eight matches, while in 2019, he has scored 125 runs in two games before an injury cut short his campaign.

This was further driven home by his contribution to India’s title triumph at the 2013 Champions Trophy, where he pounded 363 runs in five matches and finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer. What really made Dhawan an even greater batsman was his sharp fielding and personality. He is an infectious character who attracts huge followers and admiration on social media.
