Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made a late but crucial squad adjustment in IPL 2026, bringing in Akash Madhwal as a replacement for injured batter Ayush Mhatre. The young top-order batter has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after suffering a torn hamstring during CSK’s clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18.

Mhatre, who led India to the U19 World Cup title, had been one of CSK’s standout performers this season. Batting at No. 3, he scored two half-centuries in six matches and brought much-needed stability to a struggling batting lineup. His injury, however, has forced the franchise into a rethink midway through the campaign.
In an official statement, the Indian Premier League confirmed Madhwal’s inclusion, highlighting his credentials as a proven T20 performer. The right-arm pacer has previously represented the Mumbai Indians and the Rajasthan Royals, featuring in 17 matches and picking up 23 wickets. His standout moment came during IPL 2023, where he delivered sensational figures of 5/5 in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants.

CSK’s decision to sign a bowler instead of a like-for-like batting replacement underlines the growing concerns in their pace department. Injuries to key bowlers, including Khaleel Ahmed and Australian quick Nathan Ellis, have left the attack thin. Madhwal is expected to provide support to the likes of Anshul Kamboj and Matt Henry as CSK look to regain balance.

The franchise had earlier confirmed that Mhatre would require a rehabilitation period of 6 to 12 weeks, effectively ending his IPL 2026 campaign.
CSK now turn their focus to a high-voltage clash against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai head into the contest with renewed confidence following a dominant win over Gujarat Titans, powered by a century from Tilak Varma.

For CSK, the challenge is steep after a narrow loss to Hyderabad. However, much of the spotlight will be on MS Dhoni, who is widely expected to return, potentially providing both leadership and finishing strength at a critical stage of the season.
