Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are reportedly eyeing Washington Sundar as a potential replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin ahead of the next IPL season. Ashwin, who had returned to CSK after a nine-year gap, played nine matches last season, claiming seven wickets at an average of 40.42. Speculation had surrounded a possible trade involving Ashwin and Sanju Samson, but the veteran’s retirement has now put those rumours to rest.

With Ashwin stepping away from the IPL, CSK is looking to fill the void with a versatile all-rounder. According to Tamil Samayam, the franchise has initiated talks with the Gujarat Titans (GT) to acquire Sundar. Reports suggest that GT are willing to release the player without any conditions, making him an attractive option for the 5-time champions.

Sundar, despite being in good form, struggled to secure a consistent spot in Gujarat’s XI last season, featuring in just six matches. He bowled 65 deliveries for two wickets and contributed 133 runs at a strike rate of 166.25, averaging 26. Signed by GT for ₹3.2 crore, Sundar’s trade to CSK is expected to involve a similar fee.

CSK’s approach in recent seasons has focused on blending experience with emerging talent. The franchise had invested in players like Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, and Ravichandran Ashwin, but these signings failed to make a significant impact, leading to fan dissatisfaction and a dip in viewership. In response, CSK management is reportedly parting ways with underperforming seniors ahead of the upcoming mini-auction.

Traditionally, CSK’s strategy relied heavily on experienced campaigners who had long-standing ties with the team, such as Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, and Dwayne Bravo. However, with these veterans retiring or stepping away after 2021, the franchise’s core model has lost some of its effectiveness. Attempts to bring in seasoned players like Robin Uthappa and Ajinkya Rahane did not yield consistent results, prompting CSK to recalibrate and focus on strategic trades like the potential acquisition of Washington Sundar.
