Dale Steyn, one of South Africa’s leading fast bowler, bowled a testing spell, perhaps, one of his best in Test cricket during South Africa’s tour of Australia in 2012 at Perth. The right-arm fast bowler was full of venom and his spell was one of the reasons why South Africa won the Test match and eventually the series.
Having won the toss, Graeme Smith, the then South African captain, won the toss and chose to bat. Apart from an unbeaten half-century from Faf du Plessis, none of the South African batsmen was amongst the runs. Resultantly, they got bundled out for 225 in 74 overs on Day 1.
It was vital for the South Africans to dismiss the Australian batsmen cheaply for it was the only option left for them to win the match. Dale Steyn dismissed Ed Cowan (0) on the first delivery that he faced.
On the morning of Day 2, he got rid of David Warner (13), Nathan Lyon (7) and Michael Clarke (5), reducing Australia to 6/45 in 16.2 overs. Australia were dented in a way that they couldn’t make a comeback into the match and ended up losing it by 309 runs.
