Mumbai Indians’ bold decision to replace Rohit Sharma as captain ahead of the new Indian Premier League (IPL) season has stirred considerable controversy within the cricketing community. Opting to trade Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans and appointing him as captain has raised eyebrows, especially considering Rohit’s stellar track record, having led MI to five IPL titles. Former South African pacer Dale Steyn expressed his concerns regarding the switch, suggesting that it could pose challenges for the team.

Dale Steyn highlighted the potential complexities arising from the change in leadership dynamics, emphasizing the importance of addressing any underlying issues well before the commencement of the tournament. He stressed the significance of pre-season camps to resolve any lingering uncertainties and ensure a smooth transition.

“I think it will be challenging – the whole dynamics of leaving Mumbai and then coming back to Mumbai. I hope they had some sort of a camp a month before the IPL. So, anything that’s bothering anyone kind of gets ironed out before the first game,” Dale Steyn stated in an interview with news agency PTI.

Despite acknowledging the potential challenges, Steyn expressed confidence in the professionalism of both Rohit and Hardik, anticipating that they would navigate the situation adeptly. He emphasized the ability of seasoned international cricketers to set aside personal differences and focus on the collective goal, ensuring that the team remains cohesive.

“You’ve got big personalities, guys who have done the decision-making before and now in a different role. It might be that little needle that we might not be able to see or hear on TV. But, these international cricketers know how to put aside their ego, and I think Mumbai will be just fine,” Dale Steyn added.
