Sunrisers Hyderabad’s woes in IPL 2025 continued as they slumped to their fourth straight defeat, this time at the hands of Gujarat Titans at their home ground, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 6. The loss has pushed the Pat Cummins-led side to the bottom of the points table, managing just one win from five games, and a worrying net run rate of -1.629 now threatens to derail their playoff hopes early in the tournament.

SRH, who reached the IPL final last season by playing an ultra-aggressive brand of cricket, have stuck to the same high-risk approach this year. Unfortunately for them, the results haven’t followed. While the strategy paid dividends in 2024, the 2025 campaign has been a different story, with top-order failures becoming a recurring theme.

Head coach Daniel Vettori addressed the team’s struggles in the post-match press conference. While he defended the attacking approach, he emphasized the need for greater situational awareness and adaptability. “We believe in our style, and we know it can work. But we must respect the conditions and the quality of the opposition bowling. Teams are targeting our top three with well-thought-out plans, and our execution hasn’t matched that level yet,” Vettori explained.

Despite the string of losses, Vettori remains calm, alongside captain Pat Cummins. “I don’t think Pat has ever panicked in his life, and I’m similar. But yes, we understand losing four in a row puts us in a tough spot. We came into the season with expectations after being runners-up last year, and it’s not easy to digest this start,” he added.

In the game, the Gujarat Titans outclassed SRH from the outset. After choosing to bowl first, GT restricted the home side to 152/8, thanks to a fiery 4/17 spell by Mohammed Siraj. In response, GT cruised to victory in 16.4 overs. Captain Shubman Gill led from the front with a calm 61* off 43 balls, while Washington Sundar (49) and Sherfane Rutherford (35*) provided crucial support.

With their season quickly slipping away, SRH must regroup and rethink how to turn their aggressive intent into consistent results.
