Team India displayed a clinical performance during the third T20I against West Indies at Guyana’s Providence Stadium, bringing the series to a 2-1 standing. However, the absence of key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has highlighted India’s struggling batting lineup. Despite Suryakumar Yadav’s impressive knock of 83 and Tilak Varma’s continuing ascent since his debut, the top-order’s performance remains lackluster.
Both Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill have faced challenges in the T20I series, and Sanju Samson, who has been shuffled in the batting order, has also struggled. As the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 approaches, time is running out for Samson to make a strong case for his selection.

Unfortunately, his recent performance in the third T20I not only displayed uncertainty behind the stumps but also raised doubts about his batting abilities. Former Pakistan cricketer Danish Kaneria criticized Samson for his underwhelming performance in the T20I series, pointing out that while India rested key players to provide opportunities to youngsters, Samson has failed to capitalize on these chances.
With injuries sidelining players like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, Samson has a significant chance to solidify his place in the ODI squad. However, his scores of 9, 51, 12, and 7 in the last four innings have left much to be desired.
Danish Kaneria expressed his disappointment, saying, “India rested Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli so that they could give others a chance, as many have complained that a few players haven’t had enough opportunities.” He further added, “Now that India has played them, when are you going to score runs, Sanju Samson? He has had enough chances now.”

Samson, now 28, didn’t get the opportunity to bat in the third T20I. However, he must aim to make a significant impact in the remaining two T20I matches in Florida.
