Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria reckons that the young Indian wicket-keeper, Rishabh Pant isn’t mature enough to lead the Indian team. The Indian team management is currently worried about the availability of Rohit Sharma for the rearranged Test against England after he tested positive for Covid-19. Among the names being considered for the Indian captaincy, Pant and Jasprit Bumrah are two prominent names.

Danish Kaneria weighed in on the topic on his YouTube channel and said that the wicketkeeper isn’t mature enough to lead Team India. He said, “He is not even mature enough to be a captain. Because Rohit is doubtful for the Test match. Let’s see.”

Former spinner also asserted that the best option for being the stand-in skipper at the moment is Virat Kohli, who was leading the Indian team the last time they visited England. Kaneria also said that he was surprised that Kohli’s name hadn’t been mentioned in the discussion.

Danish Kaneria explained, “When we talk about captaincy, there are three-four names which are coming up and Virat Kohli’s name is not there. I was surprised that Kohli’s name has not been suggested. Pant’s name is there, Jasprit Bumrah’s name is there. They might lead the team at Edgbaston.”

He further added, “Because Cheteshwar Pujara has been playing for so long, he is the senior-most player in the team, he can lead the team if Rohit Sharma is not there. The best option you have got is Virat Kohli. You can make him the captain. Ravichandran Ashwin is another name which is coming up to be the captain is Rohit is not there.”

The former Pakistan spinner said that Pant did a horrible job while captaining India during the T20I series against South Africa earlier this month. Kaneria said that the 24-year-old’s own batting form has come under the scanner when he is made the skipper.

Danish Kaneria said, “Kohli is one of the best choices as captain if Rohit Sharma is not available. You also have Ashwin. Pant was given the captaincy in the South Africa series and he did a horrible job. His own batting collapses when he does captaincy. Rishabh Pant should not be the captain any more. Ravichandran Ashwin can be a good choice. I think the load should not be on Bumrah. he should concentrate on his bowling. I would not keep Bumrah or Pant for captaincy.”
