New Zealand’s in-form batter Daryl Mitchell achieved a major career milestone on Wednesday (November 19), displacing India captain Rohit Sharma to become the new World No. 1 ODI batter. Mitchell, who struck a superb century in the first ODI against the West Indies last week, climbed two spots to take the top position, ending Rohit’s brief stay at No. 1.

With 782 rating points, Mitchell now leads the global charts by a narrow margin—just one point ahead of Rohit. His rise is historic for New Zealand cricket, as he becomes only the second Kiwi ever to hold the No. 1 ranking for ODI batters. The first was the legendary Glenn Turner, who achieved the feat way back in 1979.

Over the years, New Zealand has produced several world-class ODI batters—Martin Crowe, Andrew Jones, Roger Twose, Nathan Astle, Kane Williamson, Martin Guptill, and Ross Taylor—. Yet, none, besides Turner and now Mitchell, has ever occupied the top spot. Mitchell’s ascent marks a rare achievement and underlines his remarkable consistency across formats.

Elsewhere in the ODI list, Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran slipped one place to No. 3. At the same time, India’s Shubman Gill (4th), Virat Kohli (5th), and Shreyas Iyer (8th) continue to hold their places inside the top 10.

The completion of the first Test between India and South Africa in Kolkata also brought significant movement in the ICC Test rankings. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma broke into the top five for the first time in his career after a resilient, unbeaten 55 in the second innings. India skipper Shubman Gill, despite being injured during the match, climbed two places to No. 11.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto also made gains, moving up four spots to joint 34th after his century against Ireland in Sylhet.

On the bowling front, India spearhead Jasprit Bumrah comfortably retained his position as the No. 1 Test bowler, following a six-wicket haul at Eden Gardens. Fellow Indians Kuldeep Yadav (up to a career-best 13th) and Ravindra Jadeja (15th) also surged upward after their impactful performances.
