New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell has praised Abhishek Sharma for his sensational century in the third T20I, describing the Indian opener’s power-hitting as world-class. Abhishek’s extraordinary innings helped India chase down a challenging target of 199 in Wellington on Tuesday, October 27, securing a six-wicket victory and an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Abhishek produced a breathtaking performance, scoring 113 runs off just 38 deliveries. He reached his half-century in only 15 balls before completing his century in 35 deliveries, leaving the New Zealand bowling attack struggling to contain him. India eventually reached 199/4 in just 13.2 overs, finishing the chase with 40 balls remaining.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Daryl Mitchell acknowledged the quality of Abhishek’s batting and admitted that the left-hander’s performance deserved recognition. “A very special innings, I think. Some of that hitting was world-class and that is why he is one of the best in the world at what he does. You take your hat off and say, well played,” Mitchell said.

The New Zealand batter also reflected on the significance of Abhishek’s innings, suggesting that it would remain memorable for a long time despite the hosts losing the series. “It was definitely his night and I am sure it is one that people would not forget for a long time. The series has gone, but there are still two games left for New Zealand,” Mitchell added.
After reaching his century, Abhishek celebrated with his trademark meditation pose, capping an innings that featured nine fours and 11 sixes. His remarkable display powered India to one of their most dominant victories in T20I cricket.

Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided excellent support at the other end, smashing 45 runs off 19 balls. The pair combined for a 133-run opening partnership in just 7.1 overs, effectively taking the contest away from New Zealand during the powerplay.
India scored 118 runs without losing a wicket in the first six overs, setting a new record for the highest powerplay total in men’s T20I cricket. They also reached 100 runs in just five overs, highlighting the extraordinary pace of their scoring. The victory further strengthened India’s impressive record in New Zealand.

Although New Zealand suffered a series defeat, Mitchell’s praise for Abhishek underlined the exceptional quality of the Indian opener’s performance. With two matches remaining, the hosts will look to respond, while India will aim to maintain their remarkable momentum.
