Veteran South African batter David Miller made a bold statement after South Africa national cricket team handed India national cricket team a crushing 76-run defeat in their Super 8 clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad. The experienced left-hander, who was named Player of the Match, said the result showed that even a strong Indian side can be beaten if teams execute their plans with discipline.

India entered the contest unbeaten in the tournament under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, but South Africa produced a clinical performance with both bat and ball to halt their winning streak. Miller’s composed yet aggressive innings played a key role in that statement victory. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Miller addressed what the convincing win revealed about the much-fancied Indian side.
“That they are beatable. India come with, as I mentioned, an incredible team. But I think for us in a tournament like this, it’s about making sure that we do, as I said, I keep going back to the simple things and making sure that we stay in our lane as a player and do the job and get the job done,” David Miller said.

“We’re a mature team. A lot of guys have played together and a lot of cricket for South Africa and that goes a long way under pressure. So I think it’s just staying in your lane, making sure that you get the job done and keep wanting more,” he added.
The defeat turned into a historic setback for India. It became their second-biggest loss by runs in T20 Internationals and their heaviest defeat in the history of the T20 World Cup, a major blow at the start of the Super 8 stage. Ironically, South Africa had begun the innings under pressure after slipping to 20 for 3 inside the Powerplay. Miller then stepped in to rebuild the innings with remarkable composure.

The left-hander smashed 63 off just 35 balls, striking seven fours and three sixes. His most crucial contribution came through a 97-run fourth-wicket partnership with Dewald Brevis, which completely shifted the momentum of the match.
Miller targeted the shorter boundaries and rotated strike smartly once settled. He even attacked India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, forcing India to rethink their bowling plans. Late fireworks from Tristan Stubbs helped South Africa finish strongly at 187 for 7.

India’s chase never gained momentum as Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma fell cheaply. With no significant partnerships forming, the pressure kept mounting and India were eventually bowled out for 111. The heavy defeat also significantly damaged India’s net run rate. With crucial Super 8 matches against the West Indies and Zimbabwe national cricket teams still ahead, their margin for error has become extremely narrow.
