In a playful exchange during the Sydney Smash in the Big Bash League (BBL), David Warner engaged in banter with Steve Smith, creating a light-hearted moment that culminated in Smith’s dismissal for a golden duck. Warner, who recently retired from Tests and ODIs, returned to the BBL for the Sydney Thunder as part of his preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.

With David Warner relinquishing his opening spot to Smith in Tests for the series against the West Indies, the two Australian stars found themselves facing off in the BBL. Before the start of Smith’s innings, Warner, in a jovial manner, advised his teammate to mark the crease properly, especially as an opening batsman.

“Nothing’s distracting him. Nothing ever distracts him. But I say, actually, he’s got a mark on his foot there. So he might. He might be fidgety about that. No, that’s not center. A little bit to the right, mate. If you open the batting, mate, you gotta mark it properly. One go only. No, he’s He’s locked in. He’s locked in,” joked David Warner.

The banter seemed to have an impact, as Steve Smith, after the exchange, skied the ball, and Nathan McAndrew took the catch in the deep, resulting in a golden duck for the former Australian captain.

Warner’s eventful day at the Sydney Cricket Ground began with a grand entrance as he arrived in a helicopter directly from his brother’s wedding. The helicopter landed on the outfield, close to the iconic ‘Thanks Dave’ logo, which was painted during Warner’s farewell Test match against Pakistan’s Shan Masood.
