Exactly seven years ago, Lasith Malinga registered his second ODI five-wicket haul and career-best figures during the 14th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup against Kenya at Colombo in 2011.
Jimmy Kamande, the then Kenyan captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. Barring half-centuries from Collins Obuya (52) and David Obuya (51), none of the Kenyan batsmen reached double figures. Resultant of which, Kenya ended up scoring 142-10 in 43.4 overs. Malinga, who had opened the bowling for the home team, ended up with figures of 7.4-0-38-6.
All the six (four bowled and two lbw) of Malinga’s dismissals were off yorker deliveries. The opposition batsmen fell short of ideas against this brutal attack by Malinga. He also picked up his second ODI hat-trick as he dismissed Tanmay Mishra (0), Peter Ongondo (0) and Shem Ngoche (0) on successive deliveries. He became the second Sri Lankan bowler after Chaminda Vaas to register a hat-trick in a World Cup match.
Sri Lanka won the match comfortably as they chased a 143-run target in the 19th over. Opener Upul Tharanga top-scored with 67* (59).
