Exactly a couple of years ago, during the 28th match of the ICC World Twenty20 between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Kolkata, Mustafizur Rahman registered his maiden T20I five-wicket haul. He became only the second Bangladeshi bowler (after Elias Sunny) to achieve the feat, the first one to do it in a world T20I event.
Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s captain, had won the toss and chose to bat. Mashrafe Mortaza used five bowlers in the powerplay, which worked to the likes of the Bangladeshi fans as New Zealand could only manage to score 39-1 in the powerplay. Rahman had bowled the fourth over, gave away a couple of runs and on the last ball of his over, picked up the wicket of Henry Nicholls (7).
Rahman was brought back into the attack to bowl the ninth over of New Zealand’s innings. Having a happy knack of picking up wickets, this time he dismissed the opposition captain in Williamson (42). The batsman was deceived by Rahman’s slower cutter only to see his off-stump take a beating.
Given his abilities, it was anticipated that Rahman would now ball in the death overs. Rightly so, he bowled his last two overs as the 18th and the 20th over of the innings. Another slower cutter saw the demise of Grant Elliott (9), courtesy of a brilliant catch by Shuvagata Hom. In his ultimate over, Rahman added to his tally of wickets by picking up a couple of wickets in Mitchell Santner (3) and Nathan McCullum (0). Both dismissals coming after the batsmen failed to pick his cutters at all.
In their allotted quota of 20 overs, New Zealand posted a commonplace 145-8. Rahman finished his spell with his career-best bowling figures of 4-0-22-5.
As unfortunate as it sounds, Bangladesh ended up losing the match by a massive 75 runs. They were bundled out for a meagre 70 in 15.4 overs. Hom, who came in to bat at No. 8, top-scored with 16 (17). With bowling figures of 4-0-12-3, Elliott was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers.
