Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta has said that he believes Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell might get the much-needed success in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

While speaking to Sports Today prior to the IPL 2021, Deep Dasgupta said that Maxwell’s playing style might fit for Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, Glenn Maxwell had a poor IPL season last year in the UAE where he scored only 108 runs in 13 matches at an average of less than 16 for Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings and he couldn’t hit a six in the entire tournament.

But soon after the international series began, he shrugged off his poor form and put up a good show during India’s limited-overs series in Australia. After that, he had a good show in the Big Bash League where he played for Melbourne Stars and scored 379 runs in 13 matches, hitting at a strike rate of more than 140 as well. Notably, RCB bought him for Rs 14.25 crore as well.

“One of the biggest additions, for me, I would be really, really interested to see Glenn Maxwell at RCB. Does this franchise suit him? He has been around in the IPL but will this franchise suit him?” Dasgupta told Sports Today. “I just have a feeling that this franchise might suit his personality and the way he plays his cricket. There is a lot of similarity in terms of the franchise, which is RCB and Glenn Maxwell. So I think this could be a year where Glenn Maxwell can prove he is as good a player in the IPL as he is any other tournament in the world.”

On the other hand, RCB Director of Cricket Mike Hesson had said that the team management will be looking to give the place for a match-winner like Glenn Maxwell to go out and express himself. He also said that Maxwell along with AB de Villiers in the middle-order will be a formidable attack. RCB will begin their IPL 2021 campaign against Mumbai Indians in the campaign opener on Friday, April 9.
