India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has played down concerns over the team’s catching lapses during the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup, insisting that the players are putting in the required work during training. India have been unbeaten throughout the tournament and secured their place in the final with a convincing 40-run victory over Bangladesh on Thursday.

However, their fielding has remained an area of concern, particularly after India dropped four chances during the semifinal. Pratika Rawal missed an overhead catch in the opening over of Bangladesh’s chase before putting down another opportunity later in the innings. Smriti Mandhana also misjudged a boundary catch, while Richa Ghosh and Nandani Sharma collided while attempting to complete a catch near square leg.

Despite the mistakes, Deepti Sharma insisted that dropped catches can happen during matches and highlighted the team’s efforts on the training ground.

“As a team in fielding, we have been doing good work in training. We are doing practice sessions, taking, you know, several catches as well as fielding also. I think that it will be a day here or a day there; it happens,” Deepti Sharma said during the post-match press conference.

With India now through to the Women’s Asia Cup final, Deepti stressed that the team remains focused on performing well in all three departments. “But we are always up for the finals as a team in all three departments,” she added.

India will face either arch-rivals Pakistan or defending champions Sri Lanka in the final. The second semifinal will determine their opponent, with Deepti revealing that the team will assess the contest before finalising its strategy.

“After this game, we will sit together tomorrow and that will help us to do more (about) strategy towards the finals,” she said. Asked whether she had a preferred opponent, Deepti remained diplomatic and insisted that India would not underestimate anyone. “Our team does not take any team lightly. Does not matter, like maybe Sri Lanka, Pakistan, whoever comes in the final. We always think as a team about how we can do better in every game,” she said.

With India chasing another Women’s Asia Cup title, Deepti’s message was clear: the team will focus on improvement rather than dwelling on individual fielding errors.
