Delhi Capitals have made a strategic mid-season move by signing Rehan Ahmed as the replacement for Ben Duckett for the remainder of IPL 2026. Duckett had withdrawn from the tournament on March 24 citing personal reasons, a decision that came with potential regulatory implications under the IPL’s updated withdrawal rules.

However, the league permits franchises to bring in any player from the auction pool as a replacement, allowing teams flexibility to recalibrate their squads based on evolving needs. DC appear to have used that flexibility smartly, waiting until the second half of the season to assess gaps before finalizing their replacement.

Rehan Ahmed, England’s promising leg-spinner, brings valuable international experience, having already featured in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. With 49 international wickets and a growing reputation in white-ball cricket, he adds a dynamic edge to Delhi’s bowling unit.

In T20Is, he has claimed 15 wickets at an average of 24.06, and his overall T20 numbers—85 wickets from 90-plus matches—underline his consistency. His ability to contribute with the bat down the order, including a quickfire cameo in the T20 World Cup, further strengthens his case.

This signing also aligns with DC’s broader team balance strategy. With Mitchell Starc cleared to return, Delhi now have the option to reshuffle their overseas combination. This could mean sacrificing an overseas batter like Pathum Nissanka to bring back Prithvi Shaw, while rotating between Starc and Rehan depending on pitch conditions. As the playoff race intensifies, such tactical flexibility could prove crucial for Delhi Capitals’ campaign.
