He has done it in the past. He has done it yet again. For all we know, he will do it in the future as well. The stage was well set for Mahendra Singh Dhoni to express himself in the Indian Premier League. Dhoni has had below average IPL with the bat so far. But with today’s match-winning innings against Sun Risers Hyderabad, he has proved all his critics wrong yet again.
When Dhoni came into bat at No. 4, Rising Pune Supergiant required 91 off 55 balls. He scored 23 runs in the first 26 balls that he faced. After getting his eye in, he then took on the opposition bowlers including tournament’s best bowler, Bhuvneshwar Kumar. In the next 11 balls that he faced, he smashed 35 runs to win the encounter for the Supergiant.
With Dhoni and Manoj Tiwary in the middle, Pune required 47 runs off the final three overs. After scoring 17 runs off the Mohammad Siraj over, the equation was brought down to 30 runs off 12 balls. The tables turned in the penultimate over which was bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. With a couple of fours and a six, Dhoni and Tiwary scored 19 in this over. Siddharth Kaul was given the ball in the final over ahead of Moises Henriques. Requiring 2 runs off the final delivery, Dhoni, very calmly, thrashed the ball through the cover region for a boundary.
The Man-of-the-Match innings yet again proved that Dhoni can finish matches out of any situation. Dhoni scored 61* (34) with the help of five fours and three sixes. By remaining not out on 15 successful chases, he is only behind Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan (each 16) in terms of batsman who have remained not out during successful chases in the IPL.
