Winning the Player of the Match award for his remarkable display in the Ranchi Test, Dhruv Jurel showcased his mettle as a promising talent in Indian cricket. His pivotal role in steering India to victory in the hometown of cricketing legend MS Dhoni marked a significant moment in his burgeoning career.
Hailing from Agra, Dhruv Jurel was drafted into the Indian team for the final three Tests of the series, replacing KS Bharat. Making an impactful debut, Jurel’s composed innings of 46 runs in Rajkot laid the groundwork for his stellar performance in Ranchi. His gritty knock of 90 runs in the first innings of the Ranchi Test, coupled with a crucial unbeaten 39-run partnership with Shubman Gill, proved instrumental in India’s triumph.

During the Ranchi Test, veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar drew comparisons between Dhruv Jurel and the legendary MS Dhoni, citing Jurel’s astute cricketing acumen and presence of mind.
“Watching the presence of mind of Dhruv Jurel makes me think he’s the next MS Dhoni in the making,” remarked Sunil Gavaskar during commentary.
However, Dhruv Jurel humbly played down the comparisons with MS Dhoni at the India Today Conclave 2024, emphasizing his individual identity and aspirations.
“Thank you so much, Gavaskar sir, for comparing me with Dhoni sir. But I want to say personally that no one can replicate what Dhoni sir has done. There is only one Dhoni. Always was and always will be. For me, I just want to be Dhruv Jurel. Whatever I do, I want to do as Dhruv Jurel,” expressed Dhruv Jurel, acknowledging Dhoni’s legendary status.

In response to Sunil Gavaskar’s comments, the cricketing icon clarified that while Jurel possesses qualities reminiscent of Dhoni, there can never be another MS Dhoni. Gavaskar emphasized Jurel’s potential to carve his own path in Indian cricket while acknowledging his resemblance to Dhoni in certain aspects of the game.
“The way he thinks about the game, the way he assesses the situation and bats accordingly, gives me the MS Dhoni feels… If Jurel can manage to do even some portion of the things Dhoni did, then it would be great for Indian cricket,” stated Sunil Gavaskar, underscoring Jurel’s bright future in Indian cricket.
