India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was involved in a heated confrontation with Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando during the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. The incident took place on the opening day and attracted considerable attention after the two players exchanged words following Jaiswal’s dismissal. India wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has now provided insight into what happened and explained why Jaiswal reacted angrily.
Speaking to former India opener Aakash Chopra on his YouTube show Baith & Bol, Dhruv Jurel said Jaiswal was initially walking quietly towards the dressing room before the situation escalated. According to Jurel, Jaiswal did not provoke Fernando or say anything while leaving the field. However, the Sri Lankan pacer allegedly abused the young batter after dismissing him, prompting Jaiswal to turn around and respond.
Jurel explained that Jaiswal is generally focused on his own game and does not actively look for confrontations. However, the Indian batter is also unlikely to remain silent if he feels another player has crossed a line.

“When Yashasvi got out, he was quietly walking towards the dressing room. He didn’t say anything. You can see the footage here. He turns around. Actually, he was abusing him. He was abusing him. He told me about it. He said, ‘Show me normal aggression. It’s okay. You took my wicket. You deserve it. But you can’t abuse me’,” Dhruv Jurel said on Baith & Bol.
Jurel’s comments also highlighted Jaiswal’s approach on the field. The young opener generally stays in his own zone while batting and does not appear interested in unnecessary arguments. However, according to Jurel, if someone initiates a confrontation, Jaiswal is prepared to respond.

Aakash Chopra agreed with that assessment, saying, “If you give him, he’ll give it back. 100%. He’s never started before. I’ve never seen him start. He doesn’t care. He’s in his zone. He’s batting.”
The confrontation occurred during the 17th over of India’s first innings in Colombo. Jaiswal had attacked Fernando during the over, hitting the Sri Lankan pacer for three boundaries. Fernando eventually had the final say, dismissing Jaiswal for 45 with the last delivery of the over.

After taking the wicket, Fernando gave Jaiswal an aggressive send-off. The Indian batter initially continued towards the pavilion before turning around and confronting the bowler. The exchange quickly became heated, with the two players making physical contact as Jaiswal’s helmet visor and forehead came into contact with Fernando’s head.
Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva and other players intervened immediately to prevent the confrontation from escalating further. The International Cricket Council subsequently took disciplinary action against both players. Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25 percent of their match fees and handed one demerit point for the incident. The ICC classified the incident as inappropriate physical contact, bringing an official conclusion to an altercation that began with a fiery exchange between two competitive players during the Colombo Test.
