India’s young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel shared a heartwarming post-match conversation with centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal following the latter’s brilliant hundred on Day 1 of the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley. Jurel, speaking on camera in a video shared by the BCCI, highlighted a telling moment from their India ‘A’ tour that reflected Jaiswal’s fierce determination to succeed in English conditions.

Jaiswal, who scored a classy 101 off 159 balls, had declared his intent weeks ago — during practice games — that scoring in England was a non-negotiable personal goal. Jurel recounted how Jaiswal wanted to face challenging conditions during net sessions too, even when the ball was swinging and seaming.

“You told me back during the India ‘A’ tour, ‘I have to score runs in England.’ Even when the ball was moving around, you wanted to face that in the nets. That stubbornness sets you apart. I’ve seen it in you since childhood,” Dhruv Jurel told Jaiswal.

With 16 boundaries and a six, Jaiswal not only brought up his third overseas Test ton in as many countries — after the West Indies and Australia — but also battled cramps to carry on his innings.

Laughing off Jurel’s praise, Jaiswal downplayed his off-field persona, saying, “I don’t do much off the field. When I need to be serious, I switch on. I try to keep my mind calm and stay focused on preparation — that really helps.” He added, “When I practice, I make sure each ball I face prepares me for pressure moments. You know how intense it can get during tough phases.”

Jaiswal credited the intra-squad match in Beckenham as another key factor in his preparation. Facing quality pace from the likes of Harshit Rana and Jasprit Bumrah, Jaiswal admitted it wasn’t easy, but staying in the fight boosted his belief.

“They were bowling brilliantly and runs weren’t coming easy. But I kept playing, and that gave me the confidence I needed. It taught me that I can survive and ride out the tough times,” he said.

That mental strength showed again at Headingley, as he laid the perfect foundation for India’s dominant start.
