Lucknow Super Giants’ rising leg-spinner Digvesh Singh has once again found himself in hot water with the IPL authorities, this time incurring a hefty fine of 50% of his match fee for breaching the league’s Code of Conduct during their 12-run win over Mumbai Indians on Friday. This marks the second consecutive match in which the 25-year-old has faced disciplinary action for the same reason.

Digvesh repeated his now-viral “notebook celebration” after dismissing Naman Dhir, echoing the gesture he had earlier used against Punjab Kings’ Priyansh Arya. The first instance had cost him 25% of his match fee, but the repeat offence has resulted in a stiffer penalty. According to the IPL’s statement on Saturday, this was Digvesh’s second Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 this season, bringing his tally to three demerit points.

Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct prohibits players from using gestures or actions that may provoke aggression or disparage opponents. While it allows celebrations in general, the league clearly took issue with the perceived taunting nature of Digvesh’s celebration.

Meanwhile, LSG skipper Rishabh Pant was also penalized for a slow over-rate during the match. As it was LSG’s first over-rate offence of the season, Pant was fined ₹12 lakh under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct.

Due to the over-rate delay, LSG were forced to field with one fewer player outside the inner circle during the final over of Mumbai’s innings. Despite the disadvantage, they managed to defend 22 runs successfully, sealing their second win of the season and maintaining momentum in the tournament.

While LSG celebrate their on-field success, the back-to-back fines serve as a reminder that flamboyance must remain within the bounds of the game’s spirit.
