India’s batting order for the next Champions Trophy appears sound on paper, but questions still loom over the two driving forces—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Although both Titans gave hints of their great selves in the recent ODI series against England, their overall consistency is still a point of discussion.

Rohit Sharma, who had been struggling for a very long time, regained his touch with a masterpiece century in the second ODI. Kohli also returned to amongst the runs through a well-crafted half-century in the third and final game of the series to help India seal a 3-0 whitewash.

But their show in the remaining two ODIs was disappointing. Rohit scored only 2 and 1 in the first and third match, while Kohli was run out for 5 in the second. Despite these ups and downs, former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar has supported the veteran pair to excel on the big stage.

“They (Rohit and Kohli) are big-match players, and when the situation calls for it, they will perform. Their very presence puts pressure on the opposition, which makes a big difference. The bigger the occasion, the better they play,” Dilip Vengsarkar said to The Times of India.

Compound to India’s problem is the unavailability of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who is nursing a shoulder injury. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, however, is hopeful of the team’s chances.

“Everything is on the right track—Rohit and Kohli getting their form is key. The result of the England series is there for everyone to see,” Saikia stated. He also noted that the conditions in Dubai would be the same as in India, where the team recently thrashed England with a 3-0 ODI series victory and a 4-1 win in T20Is. “The team’s morale and spirit are at their best,” he said.
