Former Indian cricketer and the former chairman of the selection committee of Indian cricket team Dilip Vengsarkar has slammed the Indian team selection in the recent ODI series.
In the ongoing England tour, after winning the three-match T20I series by 1-2, India lost the three-match ODI series by 2-1 despite winning the first ODI. Like the many experts, Vengsarkar also believes that the Indian team selection wasn’t right.

After pointing out that the no.3 and no.4 positions are the most crucial parts in batting, Vengsarkar questioned for not selecting KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane. While Rahane wasn’t in the limited-overs squad, Rahul was dropped in the final game after scoring 9* and 0 at the no.4 position in the two previous ODIs.
The 62-year-old former Indian captain told Hindustan Times, “Number 3 and number 4 is the most crucial pair. It speaks poorly of the selectors that we don’t have a settled number 4. How can you unsettle batsmen of the calibre of Rahul and Rahane?

“If Ajinkya cannot fit in the ODI squad, there is something more to it than meets the eye. How can you drop Rahane in the next match India is playing (ODIs) after captaining the (Test) team against Afghanistan? How can you not have confidence in your top players of the calibre of Rahane, a proven player in English conditions?”

Vengsarkar further added that these decisions can destroy the players’ confidence.
Vengsarkar added, “What’s going on? If you are going to play musical chairs then the confidence of the top player’s will take a beating. It doesn’t augur well for the future. He (Rahul) has been unsettled, which is not good for a quality batsman.”
Earlier, the former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has said about the same things. Ganguly believes India should choose either KL Rahul or Ajinkya Rahane for no.4 batting option.
Ganguly said on this, “I think two of your best batsmen are not being looked after properly. I’m not saying it’s deliberate. Maybe it’s a mistake, maybe when you look at things from the other side you look at it differently. But it’s my opinion, from this side of the ground, (either) of those two (KL Rahul or Ajinkya Rahane) have to play at 4 because it’s too much pressure for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.”
