India produced a remarkable comeback against New Zealand in the second T20I at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24, recovering from a difficult position to secure a four-wicket victory. Despite slipping to 112/6 in the 15th over while chasing 181, the visitors held their nerve to complete the target with one ball remaining. Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy played crucial roles in India’s successful chase, while Naman Dhir provided an important contribution with his aggressive batting.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik praised the team’s composure and highlighted the quality of the thrilling contest. Karthik was impressed by India’s ability to win despite their top-order batters failing to make significant contributions. He pointed out that the visitors always appeared capable of completing the chase if one batter produced a decisive innings.

“The chase, at no point, felt like that India have no chance. It always felt like if one guy comes good, it is going to happen. Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, they were phenomenal,” DineshKarthik said on Cricbuzz. He also praised India’s lower-order resilience, noting how the team turned the match around despite losing wickets at regular intervals. “It is just brilliant to see India’s top five not doing much and still India pulled off a heist in front of New Zealand’s eyes,” he added.

New Zealand controlled much of the contest after restricting India’s top order. However, Tilak’s ability to pace his innings and accelerate when required proved decisive in the closing stages.

Dinesh Karthik observed that the left-hander started cautiously before shifting gears as India’s required run rate increased. “New Zealand were in control for most of the game, barring the first powerplay. So, it is just phenomenal to see the kind of power, the composure,” he said.

He further praised Tilak’s ability to find boundaries under pressure, which helped India remain in contention and eventually seal the victory. Beyond India’s comeback, Karthik also discussed the type of pitches that produce entertaining T20 cricket. He believes surfaces that allow teams to score between 160 and 180 runs create a better contest between bat and ball.

“I vouch for these pitches. 160-180 make the best type of T20 cricket. There is a bit of cat and mouse, bowlers have their say,” Dinesh Karthik explained. He highlighted how the match featured big boundaries, quick running between the wickets and tactical challenges for both teams. “There were big boundaries, you saw running between the wickets, hustling, confusion,” he added.

Karthik also pointed to Tilak’s intensity in the final overs, revealing how the batter remained fully invested until the closing stages. “Tilak Varma, up until the penultimate ball, was angry with his partner for not running the second, so much drama,” he said.

India’s victory showcased the value of batting depth and composure in T20 cricket, while Karthik’s comments renewed the debate over pitches that offer a balanced contest between batters and bowlers.
