Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik believes India’s disappointing T20I series defeat in Ireland influenced one of the biggest tactical decisions in the opening T20I against England. Despite overcast conditions and the constant threat of rain at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, India captain Shreyas Iyer chose to bat first after winning the toss, a move that surprised many.

In T20 cricket, captains generally prefer to chase when rain is forecast because the DLS method can often favour the team batting second. However, Karthik feels India’s recent struggles while chasing in Ireland, where they lost both matches, convinced the team management to take a different approach against England. Speaking after the match, Karthik said the scars of the Ireland tour were still fresh and likely played a role in India’s decision to set a target rather than pursue one.

“India, choosing to bat, was a good decision, even though, obviously, there was a bit of weather around the corner constantly. The general tendency is to chase down totals. It was a bit of an awkward evening because rain was always looming around the corner, but I do think the Ireland hangover was there a bit. So, India decided, ‘Let’s not chase and bat first’,” Dinesh Karthik said.

India’s decision appeared questionable in the opening overs as the visitors crashed to 6 for 2. Sanju Samson was dismissed cheaply before Ishan Kishan was run out following a mix-up with Abhishek Sharma, leaving the visitors in early trouble. However, captain Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a composed innings, while Abhishek Sharma launched a stunning counterattack. Their partnership steadied the innings before Shivam Dube added the finishing touches, helping India recover to a competitive 189 for 7.

Persistent rain, though, prevented England from beginning their chase, and the contest ended without a result. Karthik was particularly impressed with Iyer’s response after the skipper managed only 13 runs across two innings during the Ireland series. He believes the captain understood the responsibility of leading from the front and delivered when his team needed him most.

“He wanted to get rid of the pressure, so he batted nicely. He must have been under pressure because, as a leader, you need to walk the talk with the bat first, and he knew that. The skipper needed to put his hand up and say, ‘I am the skipper, I will get the runs,’ and he did it quite nicely,” Dinesh Karthik added.

While Iyer silenced his critics with a vital half-century, Sanju Samson’s lean run continued with another early dismissal. The wicketkeeper-batter has now come under increasing pressure, with many fans calling for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be included in the playing XI. Despite those demands, Karthik urged the team management to continue backing Samson, pointing to his experience and ability to perform on the biggest stage.

“Sanju Samson has, once again, had a bit of a failure. Three innings on the bounce means the calls are coming nice and loud for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but I still hope they back someone like Sanju Samson because, under pressure, in the T20 World Cup a few months ago, he got the job done, so we have to back him. Vaibhav needs to earn the right to play in this XI even though he is extremely talented, and I have no doubt he is going to do very well in international cricket,” Dinesh Karthik said.
