Former India captain Rahul Dravid has heaped praise on teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, describing him as a rare talent and urging cricket fans not to compare every young player with the 15-year-old prodigy. Dravid’s comments came during the launch of the fifth edition of the Maharaja Trophy T20 in Karnataka on June 11, where he spoke about the importance of nurturing young talent while maintaining realistic expectations.

Sooryavanshi has become one of the most talked-about names in Indian cricket following his remarkable rise over the past year. The Rajasthan Royals opener recently earned a place in India’s T20I squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, making him the youngest player selected for India’s men’s national team.

Speaking at the event, Rahul Dravid emphasized that talents like Sooryavanshi do not emerge frequently and should be appreciated for their uniqueness rather than becoming a benchmark for every aspiring cricketer. “Everyone should not be compared with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He is a unique player. Such players come very rarely. We should recognise and appreciate that,” Dravid said.

The former India head coach believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has the potential to enjoy a long and successful international career if he continues to progress at the same pace. Dravid expressed hope that the youngster would translate his domestic success onto the international stage and become a match-winner for India in the years ahead. “He is a special talent and we have to accept that. Hopefully, he continues to perform, goes on to play for India and wins matches for the country,” he added.

Sooryavanshi’s selection comes after a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign. The left-handed batter finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, winning the Orange Cap with 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.31. He also smashed 72 sixes during the season, surpassing Chris Gayle’s long-standing record and establishing himself as one of the most destructive batters in franchise cricket.

The youngster is currently representing India A in the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka. After scoring 14 runs against Sri Lanka A in his first outing, he bounced back with an explosive 44 off just 22 balls against Afghanistan A, once again showcasing the fearless batting approach that has earned widespread admiration.

Dravid also highlighted the growing significance of the Maharaja Trophy in Karnataka’s cricket ecosystem. According to him, the tournament provides young players with valuable exposure to pressure situations, media attention and competitive cricket, all of which help prepare them for higher levels of the game.

“I think it’s a very important tournament for Karnataka cricket because it gives young boys a great opportunity to showcase their talent. There is a lot of hype around the tournament and significant media coverage, which creates pressure and expectations,” Rahul Dravid explained. “That is good for their development because they will face similar situations as they move to higher levels.”

With IPL franchises closely tracking performances in the Maharaja Trophy, the competition has increasingly become an important pathway for aspiring cricketers looking to break into professional and elite-level cricket.
