Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to begin their IPL 2025 campaign with a high-stakes season opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens on March 22. However, the defending champions will be stepping onto the field without two key figures from their title-winning squad—former captain Shreyas Iyer and mentor Gautam Gambhir.

Iyer, who led KKR to their third IPL title, was not retained ahead of the mega auction and was snapped up by Punjab Kings for a record-breaking sum. Meanwhile, Gambhir, who played a pivotal role in shaping KKR’s success as a mentor, has taken on the prestigious role of India’s head coach, leaving the franchise with significant voids to fill.

To navigate this transition, KKR have brought in former West Indies all-rounder and IPL icon Dwayne Bravo as the new team mentor, while experienced Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has been appointed captain. Rahane, who briefly played for KKR in 2022, brings a wealth of experience, having led teams at the international and domestic levels, including Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Dwayne Bravo, known for his tactical acumen, revealed that he has already reached out to Gambhir for insights into the winning formula that powered KKR’s 2024 triumph.
“GG had his own style, and I have mine. We’re both successful in our own ways, but I did message him a few times,” Dwayne Bravo told PTI. “It would be disrespectful not to learn from what he did last season. The core of the team remains, and it’s important to build on that.”
