Play came to a sudden halt at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Friday morning when an earthquake struck Dhaka during the first session of Day 3 of the second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland. Tremors were felt across the ground, prompting a brief but tense interruption to the match.

On-air commentators confirmed that the commentary box shook noticeably. Irish players quickly walked out of their dressing room and gathered near the boundary rope, while spectators looked unsettled but remained calm. Thankfully, the tremors lasted only a few seconds, and play resumed shortly afterwards without any significant disruption.

Before the unexpected pause, Ireland had shown admirable resilience despite losing two early wickets. They reached 113 in the first session, with Stephen Doheny and Lorcan Tucker stitching a crucial 81-run stand. Walking in at a precarious 98/5, the pair capitalised on Bangladesh’s inconsistent lengths, finding regular boundaries to steady the innings before nature intervened.

Their recovery came a day after Bangladesh asserted complete dominance with the bat. Senior pros Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das powered Bangladesh to a formidable 476, building on their overnight score of 340/5.

Mushfiqur Rahim, starting the morning on 99, reached his 13th Test hundred with a composed single, becoming only the eleventh cricketer in history to score a century in his 100th Test. He eventually fell for 106 to debutant Matthew Humphreys. Litton was equally impressive, racing to his century with a six and a four in quick succession.

Ireland managed moments of success with the ball on Day 2. Andy McBrine secured his second Test six-wicket haul, while Humphreys and Gavin Hoey picked up two wickets each. Remarkably, this was the first time Ireland’s spinners claimed all ten wickets in a Test innings.

However, Ireland’s reply faltered early, slipping to 98/5 by stumps. Paul Stirling’s promising 27 ended quickly, and wickets continued to tumble against Bangladesh’s skilful spin attack. Hasan Murad delivered the ball of the day to remove Curtis Campher, while Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz also chipped in. By the close, Doheny and Tucker were battling hard, but Bangladesh remained firmly in control of the Test.
