Kuldeep Yadav’s (6/25) impressive bowling and Rohit Sharma’s (137*) unbeaten century knock helped the Indian team to clinch an easy 8-wicket victory (with 59 balls to spare) against the hosts England in the first ODI of the three-match ODI series at Trent Bridge (Nottingham) on Thursday (July 12). England was bundled out for 268 runs while India reached the target in 40.1 overs after losing just two wickets.
After winning the toss, Indian skipper Virat Kohli decided to field first. England had a good opening start as the openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow provided a powerful 73-run partnership.
But just after the end of the first powerplay, Kuldeep Yadav showed his brilliant bowling skills that put the hosts into trouble in very quick time. The scorecard suddenly went down to 105/4 from 73/0.
As Kuldeep finished with the impressive bowling figure of 10-0-25-6, he dismissed – both the openers Roy (38) and Bairstow (38), Joe Root (3), Ben Stokes (50), Jos Buttler (53) and David Willey (1).
While Kuldeep produced a total of 38 dot deliveries, he neither conceded a boundary nor an extra.
Apart from Kuldeep, only Umesh Yadav (2/70) and Yuzvendra Chahal (1/51) took wickets for India.
In reply, Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan provided a flying start and put a 59-run opening partnership with his opening partner Rohit Sharma. After Dhawan was dismissed on 40 off 27 balls (8 fours), opener Rohit and the skipper Virat Kohli put a brilliant 167-run second-wicket partnership that set the game for the visitors.
After completing his half-century in 54 balls, Rohit played more furious and completed his century in just 82 balls.
Meanwhile, Kohli completed his half-century in 55 balls and stretched that innings to 75 off 82 balls (7 fours) before he was stumped out.
However, Rohit finished the game safely by remaining unbeaten on 137 off 114 balls with 15 fours and 4 sixes, while KL Rahul was not out on just 9 runs. India reached the target in 40.1 overs after losing just two wickets.
Among the English bowlers, only Moeen Ali (1/60) and Adil Rashid (1/62) were able to pick up a wicket.
With this emphatic first ODI victory, where Kuldeep Yadav won the Player of the Match for his extraordinary bowling performance, India has a 0-1 lead in the three-match ODI series.
