England’s middle-order batsman, Ollie Pope, has been dealt a major setback as he has been ruled out of the remaining three Ashes matches due to a shoulder injury. Pope sustained the injury during the second Test at Lord’s and subsequent scans have revealed the need for surgery, leading to his absence for the rest of the summer campaign.

In an official statement, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the extent of Pope’s injury and the subsequent requirement for surgery. The 25-year-old’s absence will be a significant blow to England, who have already lost the first two Tests of the series. Another defeat would severely dent their chances of reclaiming the Ashes.

The ECB further stated that no replacement will be named for Pope in the upcoming third Test at Leeds. Instead, he will undergo rehabilitation under the close supervision of the England and Surrey medical teams. This decision indicates that Dan Lawrence is expected to take Pope’s place at number three in the batting order for the third Test.

Lawrence, with 11 Test appearances under his belt, has scored 551 runs, including four half-centuries. His impressive First-Class record of 6050 runs in 113 matches, including 14 centuries and 28 fifties, demonstrates his capabilities as a batsman.

England currently finds themselves trailing 2-0 in the five-match series following their defeat at Lord’s. Their aim is to win the Ashes for the first time since 2015, while Australia seeks their first series win in England since 2001. The absence of Ollie Pope will undoubtedly be a significant setback for England as they strive to turn the tide and mount a comeback in the series.
