Former England captain Eoin Morgan has denied all reports that are suggesting he could replace Matthew Mott as the next white-ball coach on July 23, Tuesday as well. However, England’s defence of both their world titles ended poorly as they had a poor campaign in India last year during the ODI World Cup. This was followed by a semi-final exit by India in the T20 World Cup 2024 as well, as the pressure has started to mount on Matthew Mott as well.
And, reports in the British media have suggested that Mott would leave the post and England has started to find possible candidates. Morgan has been one of the names that was linked with the job, but he quickly dismissed the suggestions. Speaking to Sky Sports, while commentating for The Hundred, Morgan said that it was actually news to him as well.
“This news is actually news to me,” he said. “It’s obviously not nice when a coach comes under fire and there is a lot of speculation about his future, but only time will tell what will happen.”
Eoin Morgan also admitted that he would want to coach the team down the line, but not now. The former England captain also said that he has a young family at the moment and he wants to spend time with them. Morgan also added that he is enjoying his commentary duty as well.
“I’ve been asked a lot [in the media] over the past couple of months about the role, and if I would take it on,” Morgan said. “My answer has simply been that the timing for everything in my life at the moment is not right. Yes, I want to coach down the line. But I have a young family, and I spend a lot more time at home and watching cricket doing this [commentary]. I’m absolutely loving what I’m doing,” said Morgan.
On the other hand, Rob Key, England’s managing director, has said that a review of the team’s performance during the T20 World Cup would take place in the coming weeks and it seems like the process is underway too. This puts a lot of pressure on Matthew Mott and England captain Jos Buttler, who is currently recovering from a calf injury and not playing in The Hundred as well.
