In their final league game of IPL 2023 on May 21, Gujarat Titans emerged victorious over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), resulting in RCB’s elimination from the tournament. RCB captain Faf du Plessis has candidly admitted that his team did not deserve to be in the top 4, as they failed to perform cohesively as a unit.
Initially, Royal Challengers Bangalore had a promising start to the season, winning 7 out of their first 13 games and accumulating 14 points. However, they needed a win against Gujarat Titans in their final league match to secure a spot in the IPL 2023 playoffs, which they ultimately couldn’t achieve.
“I am extremely disappointed that our season ends here. If we analyze our performance honestly, we’ll admit that we were not one of the top teams in the competition,” expressed Faf du Plessis in a post-match video shared by RCB on May 22.

Reflecting on their IPL 2023 journey, the RCB skipper acknowledged, “We were fortunate to witness some exceptional individual performances throughout the season, but as a collective unit, we do not merit a place in the semifinals, considering our performance across 14-15 games.”
The defeat still stings for Faf du Plessis and his team, as they made a valiant effort on Sunday but fell short. Faf highlighted some positive aspects of RCB’s campaign, particularly praising the outstanding contributions of Glenn Maxwell, the consistent partnerships between himself and Virat Kohli, as well as Mohammed Siraj’s impressive performance with the ball. However, he also acknowledged that there were certain areas of the game where the team consistently fell short.

Royal Challengers Bangalore posted a formidable total of 197-5 against Gujarat Titans, courtesy of a brilliant century by their star batsman Virat Kohli. However, they were unable to defend the total as Gujarat Titans’ batsman Shubman Gill also scored a hundred, leading his team to chase down the target in 19.1 overs.
Throughout the IPL 2023 tournament, RCB struggled with inconsistency as they heavily relied on a few key players. While Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Siraj, and Faf du Plessis himself had remarkable seasons, they did not receive sufficient support from the rest of the team, ultimately resulting in their early exit from IPL 2023.
