India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from a Kolkata hospital following a concerning neck injury sustained during the first Test against South Africa. A viral video circulating on social media shows Gill leaving the medical facility wearing a cervical collar, indicating the seriousness of his condition. While there’s a slim chance he may recover in time, it’s increasingly unlikely that Gill will play in the second Test, scheduled to begin on Saturday in Guwahati.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the media about the situation, emphasising that a decision on Gill’s participation will depend on further medical evaluation. “He (Gill) is still being assessed. So, let’s see. The physios will take a call this evening, and we will take a call,” Gambhir explained after India’s defeat in the Kolkata Test on Sunday.

The injury occurred on Day 2 when Gill appeared visibly uncomfortable even before the start of play. He bravely walked out to bat in India’s first innings, managing to get off the mark with a slog-sweep for four. However, shortly after, he retired hurt, walking off with the team physio. Gill was later stretchered to the hospital and reportedly spent time in the ICU under observation.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the injury and his omission from further participation in the match. “Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play,” read a BCCI statement.

“He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” the statement added.
With India trailing 0-1 in the two-match series after a 30-run defeat inside three days, Gill’s potential absence creates a significant challenge for the hosts heading into the crucial second Test in Guwahati.
