Karun Nair’s long-awaited return to the Indian Test side after eight years has not quite gone to script. Selected for the prestigious Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the Vidarbha batter was backed to bring experience and stability to the middle order. But three Tests in, Nair is yet to produce the kind of performance that once earned him a place in Indian cricket’s elite.

His comeback began on a sour note with a first-innings duck at Headingley. Since then, Nair has looked more assured at the crease, displaying glimpses of his trademark composure and timing. Yet, the scores haven’t reflected his potential. His best so far remains a fighting 40 in the first innings at Lord’s — a knock that showed promise before Ben Stokes dismissed him with a sharp delivery, and Joe Root held a blinder in the slips.

In the fourth innings at Lord’s, India were chasing 193 in fading light to take a 2-1 series lead. With Jaiswal falling early to Archer, Nair walked in alongside KL Rahul and looked compact. However, with just minutes to Stumps, he misjudged a delivery from Brydon Carse that came in with the angle. He offered no shot, was struck on the back pad, and after a short chat with Rahul, chose not to review.

Replays confirmed it was crashing into off-stump — another soft end to a promising start. Karun Nair’s 14 off 33 added to a string of underwhelming scores. With six innings now under his belt, pressure is mounting.

Many fans are calling for the return of Sai Sudharsan, who was dropped after the first Test. As selection debates grow louder, one thing is clear — time is running out for Karun Nair to turn this comeback into a lasting revival.
