The Indian middle-order batter, Shreyas Iyer faced the wrath of netizens after a disappointing performance in the first ODI against Australia in Mohali. The right-handed batsman’s innings was cut short when he was run out in a self-induced error. Coming to bat in the 22nd over after the dismissal of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Iyer’s stay at the crease was brief.

In the 24th over, he pushed a delivery from leg spinner Adam Zampa towards cover and attempted a quick single without consulting his partner, Shubman Gill, at the non-striker’s end. Realizing the lack of a run, Gill tried to stop Iyer, but it was too late. A swift throw from Cameron Green reached the wicketkeeper, Josh Inglis, who promptly removed the bails, ending Iyer’s innings.

Although Shreyas Iyer attempted a last-minute dive, it was in vain. Iyer’s performance in the field didn’t fare any better, as he dropped a catch that allowed David Warner to continue his innings. Warner capitalized on the reprieve and scored 52 runs off 53 balls. The dropped chance occurred on the final ball of the ninth over.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup on the horizon, opportunities for Shreyas Iyer to prove himself are dwindling. India has only two more games in the ongoing ODI series against Australia before facing them again in the World Cup opener on October 8 in Chennai.
