Pant was under pressure going into the Test series against Australia in December. However, he proved his critics wrong by playing back-to-back sensational knocks in the Sydney and Gabba Test.

Engineer talked about Pant and MS Dhoni during a recent interaction with Sports Tak and said both of these players reminded him of his old days. He also cheekily mentioned he was a better stumper than Pant and Dhoni.

“I’ve always liked Rishabh Pant as an individual. I’m very fond of him. Pant and Dhoni reminded me of my younger days. I was the same attacking batsman, but I’d like to think I was a better wicketkeeper,” Engineer said in an interview with Sports Tak.

Further, he heaped praises on Pant for his batting display in international cricket while calling him a unique phenomenon.

“As a batsman, he is a unique phenomenon. He’s got that confidence that very few people have. You saw him in Australia, only a complete idiot or a man with supreme confidence would do that. And I wouldn’t call him an idiot at all. I would call it supreme confidence,” he added.

“He is a very talented cricketer. I wish him nothing but the very best of everything. He is maturing with every game and he will be a great servant for India.”

Currently, Pant is in England where Team India is playing in the five-match Test series. Despite looking good while batting, Pant failed to convert his start into something substantial. He, though, will try to play a big knock in the next Test, scheduled to be played in Leeds from August 25.
