As India trail 1–2 in their five-match Test series against England, scrutiny has intensified around Karun Nair’s role at No. 3. Former India wicket‑keeper Farokh Engineer minced no words ahead of the crucial Manchester Test, criticising Nair’s inability to convert starts into match-winning contributions. “He’s got beautiful 20s and 30s, beautiful cover drives and all that,” Engineer remarked, “but a beautiful 30 is not expected from a No. 3. You’ve got to get a not‑so‑beautiful 100… the expectations should be much higher”.

Engineer, recalling Nair’s prolific 2024–25 season—863 Ranji Trophy runs and 779 in the Vijay Hazare—labelled his form in England “underwhelming.” Despite solid starts, Nair has amassed just 131 runs in six innings (average 21.83), with a top score of 40 (Hindustan Times).

With the series balance at stake, Farokh Engineer suggested selectors give Sai Sudharsan another chance, affirming, “pick the best XI… forget the age; if he’s good, play him to win this Test”.

Yet, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has defended Nair’s presence in the squad, praising his “good rhythm, good tempo” while admitting the need for more substantial scores from the top order. He also pointed out that recurring batting collapses—losing six wickets for 40, rather than individual failings, have cost India momentum.

As India prepare for the Old Trafford Test beginning July 23, the management faces a tough selection call: persist with the experienced Nair in hope a big score materializes, or back a younger, hungry talent like Sudharsan. Deep Dasgupta supports the latter, noting Sudharsan’s age and potential edge.

Ultimately, Karun Nair’s position hinges on his performance in Manchester. With the series hanging by a thread, his ability to deliver consistent, impactful innings will determine whether he remains a fixture at No. 3—or makes way for fresh talent as India chase a much-needed turnaround.
