On the second day of the Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Test at Chattogram’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Sri Lankan batsman Prabath Jayasuriya experienced an unexpected stroke of luck. As he faced the Bangladesh bowlers, Jayasuriya received a lifeline when a straightforward catch at slip was fluffed by three Bangladeshi fielders in succession.

The comical episode unfolded when Jayasuriya, batting on 6, drove confidently but edged the ball towards first slip, where skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto awaited. However, Shanto couldn’t hold onto the catch, causing the ball to pop up.

As the ball looped upwards, second slip Shahadat Hossain Dipu and third slip Zakir Hasan rushed in to seize the opportunity. Despite their synchronized efforts, neither managed to secure the catch, with Dipu even missing the rebound. In a desperate attempt, Zakir lunged forward, but the ball slipped through his fingers, much to Jayasuriya’s relief.

The dropped chance allowed Jayasuriya to continue his innings, eventually contributing 28 runs to Sri Lanka’s total, providing support to Kamindu Mendis, who remained unbeaten on 92. Sri Lanka amassed 531 runs in their first innings.

This amusing incident added to the drama of the match, following a quirky DRS review by Shanto on Day 1. Despite these moments, Sri Lanka seems poised for victory after their dominant performance in the first Test, where they secured a 328-run win over Bangladesh.

While Sri Lanka’s batters put up an impressive total, no player managed to score a century. Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis came close, both falling in the nineties. Other contributors included Nishan Madushka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, and captain Dhananjaya de Silva, all scoring half-centuries.

As the series progresses, Sri Lanka will aim to capitalize on their strong start and secure a series victory against Bangladesh.
