Explosive opener Finn Allen credited New Zealand’s pre-tournament preparation in India as a key factor behind their dominant semifinal victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Allen delivered one of the most memorable innings in the tournament’s history, smashing an unbeaten 100 off just 33 balls to power the New Zealand national cricket team into the final with a commanding nine-wicket win over the South Africa national cricket team at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Under the lights at the iconic venue, FinnAllen produced a breathtaking display of T20 batting, dismantling South Africa’s bowling attack with fearless stroke play. His innings, packed with towering sixes and crisp boundaries, helped New Zealand chase down the 170-run target in just 12.5 overs, sealing victory with a remarkable 43 balls to spare.

However, the New Zealand opener was quick to credit the bowlers for laying the foundation for the emphatic win. “It was an extremely impressive start from our bowlers — they set the game up for us, for sure,” Finn Allen said during the post-match media interaction.

Earlier in the evening, New Zealand’s disciplined bowling unit kept the Proteas under pressure, preventing them from building sustained partnerships and restricting them to a manageable total. According to FinnAllen, early wickets and sustained pressure on batting-friendly surfaces make the job significantly easier for the chasing side.

“On a surface like that, if you can take wickets up front and build pressure, it makes life a lot easier for the batters.” Finn Allen also highlighted the importance of New Zealand’s preparation ahead of the tournament, particularly the five-match T20I series they played against the India national cricket team on similar black-soil pitches. “…it just shows the importance of that India series the boys played before the World Cup. Five games on black soil… you can’t replicate that kind of preparation,” Allen explained.

The series may not have gone New Zealand’s way in terms of results, but the exposure to Indian conditions proved invaluable when it mattered the most in the World Cup.

“We learnt a lot as a group. As a team, we get up for the fight. In those important games, we’re prepared to scrap and stay in it till the end. The boys with the ball especially did that today and really set the tone.” Finn Allen’s spectacular innings also delighted fans in Kolkata, especially considering he is set to return to the venue soon as part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad in the upcoming Indian Premier League season after being picked up for ₹2 crore at the auction. “I’m pretty happy to bat on that wicket a bit more often… It’s my first time playing in Kolkata,” Allen said with a smile.

The Kiwi opener also praised his partner Tim Seifert, whose aggressive 58 off 33 balls ensured New Zealand maintained relentless momentum during the chase.

“He just kept dealing in boundaries… he’s been doing that all tournament. He’s in incredible form.” Reflecting on the semifinal, Finn Allen noted that New Zealand had carefully studied their earlier defeat to South Africa during the group stage. “We looked closely at that first game against them. They’ve been outstanding all tournament, backing up performances. But playing them earlier gave us a bit of insight into their plans.”

With the final now on the horizon, Allen hopes the entire nation rallies behind the team as they aim to lift the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup trophy. “As a nation, hopefully everyone gets behind us and rallies around us for Sunday. Finals are special… you don’t get too many chances at them.”
