2014 Adelaide
Like this season, the previous four-match Test series in 2014/15 also began at Adelaide Oval. Indian skipper MS Dhoni missed that Test match due to an injury, so Virat Kohli led that side and it was his first ever Test captaincy. After the tragic death of Phillip Hughes, it was the first international game for the Australian cricket team. Initially, the first Test of that series was scheduled to begin on December 4, 2014, at Brisbane but it was postponed due to the tragic death of Phillip Hughes and it was rescheduled to begin on December 9, 2014, at Adelaide. Meanwhile, the Brisbane hosted the second Test of the series, starting on 17 December 2014.
Australian skipper Michael Clarke decided to bat first after winning the toss. Opener David Warner (145), skipper Michael Clarke (128) and Steven Smith (162*) hit centuries in the first innings as Australia managed to score 517/7 decl. In reply, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli (115) scored a brilliant century and three other Indian batsmen played 50+ knocks (Murali Vijay 53; Cheteshwar Pujara 73 and Ajinkya Rahane 62) that helped India to manage 444 before getting bundled out. Aussie off-spinner Nathan Lyon (5/134) claimed a five-wicket haul in that innings.
Leading by 73 runs at the end of first innings clashes, Australia managed to score 290/5 before their declaration. David Warner again scored a brilliant century in that innings as he scored 102 runs.
Chasing down the mammoth 364 runs target, Kohli played a heroic knock of 141 runs and the opener Murali Vijay (99) remained just one run short from his century but India was bundled out on 315 runs during the last hour of the day 5 and suffered a heartbreaking defeat by 48 runs. Nathan Lyon was awarded the Player of the Match award as he bagged seven wickets (7/152) in the fourth innings of that Test as he took a total of 12 wickets in the entire game.
