Zimbabwe Cricket, which has been in crisis for some time, has turned eastwards in hope of settling down in International Cricket. The board has officially announced Lalchand Rajput to be their interim head-coach while they look out for a permanent position. The situation is not alien for Rajput who has been in similar circumstances previously.

The decision has come after a while. Previously the board had sacked their head-coach and former cricketer Heath Streak after the World Cup Qualifiers debacle. Zimbabwe was the hosts of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers and despite winning majority of the group matches, they crumbled at the crucial stages in the tournament. However, the team will be now looking for reinforcements for Rajput.

Lalchand Rajput has the experience of coaching Afghanistan national cricket team and the team took giant strides under his watchful eyes. He was also the team manager of the Indian team when the young side triumphed in the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 in 2007 in South Africa.

The official Twitter handle of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) confirmed the news of Rajput being appointed as the head coach of the team on Thursday. “ZC has named Lalchand Rajput as Zimbabwe’s interim head coach. The 56-year-old former India cricketer is a highly qualified, vastly experienced and well-respected coach who was in charge when India won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007. We wish you all the best! #Welcome,” the tweet read.

Lalchand Rajput played two Tests and four ODIs for India in the year 1985. He had a long domestic career but failed to sustain at the International level.
