Bihar pacer Sakib Hussain announced himself on the IPL stage in sensational fashion on Monday night, returning with a superb four-wicket haul to help Sunrisers Hyderabad crush Rajasthan Royals. The 21-year-old speedster finished with figures of 4/23, removing key batters including Yashasvi Jaiswal and Donovan Ferreira to produce one of the standout debut spells of IPL 2026.

For Sakib, the performance was not just a dream debut, but the latest chapter in a remarkable journey built on sacrifice, hard work and resilience. Hailing from Gopalganj in Bihar, he grew up in a modest household where his father worked as a farmer to support the family.

When knee problems made it difficult for him to continue working, the pressure on the family only increased. Sakib Hussain originally wanted to join the army and serve the country, but his path changed when coaches noticed his raw pace while he was training at a stadium where he used to go for morning runs.

That moment proved to be a turning point. He moved into tennis-ball cricket, started earning through local matches and slowly developed the ambition to make it as a professional cricketer.

There were plenty of struggles along the way. Sakib Hussain could not even afford proper bowling spikes, which were far beyond the family’s budget. In a heartfelt video shared by Kolkata Knight Riders, he recalled how difficult those days were. “Hum log agar jootey lenge toh khayenge kaha se?,” Sakib said.

At one point, he was so disappointed by the situation that he broke down in front of his mother. In one of the most moving parts of his story, his mother sold her jewellery so he could buy a pair of bowling spikes and keep chasing his dream. That sacrifice eventually paid off. Sakib went on to represent Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was later spotted by Chennai Super Kings scouts, who invited him to join as a net bowler.

He entered the IPL 2025 mega auction but went unsold in the first round before being picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders at his base price. He did not get a game and was later released, but Sunrisers Hyderabad backed him in the IPL mini-auction. On Monday, Sakib finally got his chance, and he made it count in unforgettable style.
