Virat Kohli had a hearty laugh recently after watching one of his earliest post-match interviews from the 2011 IPL season — a moment that has since gone viral. The clip shows a 22-year-old Kohli, fresh off scoring a classy 56 off 38 balls against the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), collecting his first-ever IPL Player of the Match award.

The innings, played in front of his home crowd at the Feroz Shah Kotla, saw him partner with Chris Gayle to guide Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a smooth chase of 162. But what caught Kohli’s attention 14 years later wasn’t the innings—it was his own words in the post-match chat.
“I took charge from Chris so that he could play himself in,” the young Virat Kohli had said earnestly. Reacting to it now on JioHotstar’s 18 Calling 18, the seasoned cricketer couldn’t help but laugh. “Chris could play himself in? Waah! What a misunderstanding!” he chuckled, poking fun at his own youthful confidence.

Kohli also spoke about the power of social media in unearthing old gems like these. “You guys brought it from somewhere! Since the social media boom, fans have started analysing everything we said—it’s become way too twisted now,” he joked.

Fast forward to IPL 2025, and Kohli, now 36, is still going strong. With 164 runs from four innings at a strike rate of 154.70—including two half-centuries—he’s once again leading from the front for RCB. As they gear up to face Delhi Capitals at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli stands on the cusp of another historic feat.

If he scores 50 or more, he’ll become the first Indian and just the second cricketer overall (after David Warner) to register 100 T20 half-centuries. He’s also breached the 13,000-run mark in T20s—an elite club that includes just five players worldwide—and is only two hits away from becoming the first-ever to notch up 1,000 IPL boundaries.
