During the first innings of the second Test of Australia’s tour of India in 1998 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Sourav Ganguly, who opened the bowling alongside Javagal Srinath, finished with the best bowling figures.
Having lost the first Test at Chennai by 179 runs, Mark Taylor, the then Australian captain, had won the toss and elected to bat at Kolkata. At stumps on Day 1, Australia were 233-10 in 89.4 overs. Steve Waugh and (80) and Ricky Ponting (60) were the major contributors to the Australian total.
Srinath drew first blood in the form of Michael Slater (0) and Greg Blewett (0) in the first over itself. Ganguly followed him soon from the other end with the prized scalp of Mark Taylor (3).
Ganguly came back later in the day to dismiss the last two Australian batsmen in Michael Kasprowicz (25) and Gavin Robertson (29). He ended the day with figures of 13.4-5-28-3. Watch the full video:
