Gautam Gambhir has addressed recent discussions surrounding the Indian team’s dressing room environment, stating that as a head coach he should be allowed to make mistakes just like any player. The India national cricket team coach also made it clear that he does not feel the need to respond to every rumour circulating on social media.

Speculation has been growing around the future leadership of India’s ODI side. Senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have both expressed their desire to continue playing until the 2027 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. However, several reports suggest the team management could accelerate the transition phase by promoting Shubman Gill as the next ODI captain.

At the same time, speculation about tensions within the dressing room has surfaced in recent months. Since Gambhir took over as head coach, India have lost three bilateral ODI series, including a notable home defeat against the New Zealand cricket team earlier this year. Despite the chatter, Gambhir believes mistakes are part of the process of building a team.

“I am human, I should be allowed to make mistakes as well, just like anyone else. Players should be allowed to make mistakes; I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months,” Gautam Gambhir said while speaking to RevSportz. He also dismissed the need to constantly respond to speculation circulating online. “I don’t need to clarify anything and everything that appears on social media,” he added.

Gambhir was appointed as India’s head coach on a three-and-a-half-year contract that runs until the end of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. His tenure could also extend into another historic sporting moment — the return of cricket at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The former India opener admitted that representing the country at the Olympics would be a special opportunity.

“I would love to be part of the Olympics. It is a huge honour. Very few get the honour to represent India at the Olympics,” Gautam Gambhir said. He also reiterated his philosophy when it comes to handling high-pressure matches. “I was very clear from the first day, the tougher the game, the more aggressive you have to be. Come the big game, come the grudge game, you have got to be more aggressive,” he added.
