India’s struggles against spin bowling were laid bare during their 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand, but as the team prepares for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir remains unfazed about potential challenges. While the traditional Australian pitches are known for their pace and bounce, there is speculation that Australia might surprise India with turning tracks, something the team has struggled with recently.

However, Gautam Gambhir believes that the pitch conditions are secondary to the team’s mindset and readiness. Speaking to the media before leaving for Australia, Gautam Gambhir emphasized that the team cannot control the pitch conditions, but they can control how they approach the game.

“We don’t control the wickets, what they give is their wish. Whatever they want to dish out, we are absolutely ready to play in any kind of conditions. We have all the bases covered,” he said confidently.

Gautam Gambhir further added that whether the pitch is turning, bouncy, or green, it wouldn’t make a difference as long as the team plays to its potential. “What difference does it make whether it’s a turning track, bouncy pitch, or green wicket? We still need to go out there, do the job, and play our best cricket. If we play to our potential, we can defeat anyone,” he asserted.

The head coach also made it clear that the Indian team is not overly concerned with qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025. Instead, their focus is entirely on the task at hand: performing well in the five-match Test series against Australia.

“Honestly, we are not looking at what’s going to happen in the WTC, whether we qualify or not. Every series is important. When you play for your country, every series is important, irrespective of what’s happened in the past,” Gautam Gambhir explained. For Gambhir, the upcoming series against Australia is about competing against one of the best teams in the world and focusing on delivering a top-quality performance. “We are keen to go out there and perform and try to win the series,” he concluded.
