India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has showered rich praise on T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, describing him as a “phenomenal leader” who has played a major role in creating a positive environment within the team. According to Gambhir, the Mumbai-born cricketer’s calm approach and ability to connect with players have made the coaching staff’s job much easier.

Suryakumar recently etched his name in the record books by becoming the third Indian captain to lead the India national cricket team to a ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title. His leadership during the 2026 edition earned praise from many quarters, but Gambhir believes the biggest strength of the 35-year-old lies in how he manages people and keeps the dressing room atmosphere relaxed.

Speaking on the ANI podcast, Gautam Gambhir explained how Suryakumar’s leadership style allows him to focus more on strategy and tactical planning.

“I think he’s a phenomenal leader. He has made my life a lot easier in this format. The way he keeps the atmosphere light, the way he handles the boys and the conversations he has with them — that is fantastic to have,” Gautam Gambhir said. The former India opener also pointed out that his working relationship with Suryakumar goes back several years. The two previously shared the dressing room at Kolkata Knight Riders during Gambhir’s captaincy days in the IPL, where Suryakumar served as vice-captain. “I have worked with him for a long time when I was captain at KKR and he was the vice-captain. So I know how he operates. Because of that, it becomes easier for someone like me to focus on the tactical side of things,” Gambhir added.

During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Suryakumar began the tournament on a strong note, scoring an unbeaten 84 in India’s opening Group A clash against the United States national cricket team. However, he couldn’t convert that momentum into big scores in the later stages of the competition.

Despite that, Gautam Gambhir dismissed suggestions that the burden of captaincy had affected Suryakumar’s batting performance. “I don’t think so. There has always been a team-first philosophy. When you go into a big tournament like this, you don’t look at individual performances,” Gambhir explained.

The Indian head coach stressed that success in global tournaments is ultimately measured by the team’s achievement rather than personal milestones.

“If we hadn’t won the World Cup, you probably wouldn’t be taking my interview today. And maybe people wouldn’t even talk about individual performances. When you play tournaments like this, it’s about which team wins the trophy,” he said. Gautam Gambhir concluded by emphasising that in major competitions like the T20 World Cup, collective success always outweighs individual brilliance. “For me, individual performances don’t make a big difference in such tournaments. What matters most is winning the title as a team,” he added.
