India head coach Gautam Gambhir was visibly furious after Arshdeep Singh bowled a marathon 13-ball over loaded with seven wides during the second T20I against South Africa in Mullanpur. The chaotic 11th over leaked 18 runs, shifting momentum firmly in the visitors’ favour. South Africa had already flown out of the blocks, thanks to Quinton de Kock, who looked in ominous form from ball one.

While India managed to remove Reeza Hendricks inside the powerplay, De Kock continued to dominate, peppering the boundaries and unsettling India’s bowling plans. In need of a breakthrough, captain Suryakumar Yadav brought Arshdeep back into the attack after the 10th over.

But with a well-set De Kock on strike, the move misfired instantly. The left-arm pacer was dispatched for a towering straight six off the very first ball. What followed only made India’s evening worse. Arshdeep lost control completely, sending down two wides in a row, delivering a dot, and then spraying four consecutive wides.

Gautam Gambhir, unable to hide his frustration, lashed out at the bowler from the dugout. Arshdeep bowled yet another wide before finally completing the over—one that tied him with Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq for the most wides in a T20I over among full-member teams.

He also created an unwanted record: the longest over by an Indian in T20Is, surpassing Khaleel Ahmed’s 10-ball over against Sri Lanka in 2024.

Powered by Quinton De Kock’s sensational 90 off 46 balls, featuring seven sixes and five fours, South Africa posted an imposing 213/4. Donovan Ferreira (30*) and David Miller (20*) applied the finishing touches, while Varun Chakaravarthy stood out for India with figures of 2/29.
