Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s head coach has been under scrutiny, especially after the team’s inconsistent performances in the last two Test series. However, the Champions Trophy has marked a positive phase for the former opener, with India remaining unbeaten under his leadership as they gear up for the final against New Zealand.

Amid the high-stakes tournament, Gautam Gambhir spoke about his relationship with captain Rohit Sharma, emphasizing his cricketing abilities and his qualities as a person. He praised Rohit’s leadership and credited his success to his character, calling it a vital trait for any great captain.

“Forget about Rohit as a captain, I’ve had a fabulous relationship with him. He’s just a great guy, and that is something that’s important. When you’re a good human being, you end up becoming a good leader. That’s why he has achieved so much, both in the IPL and at the international level, including winning the T20 World Cup,” Gautam Gambhir said in a video released by the ICC.

However, Gambhir made it clear that past achievements hold little significance in the present moment. “That’s history. Now, we have a new challenge ahead. Hopefully, he can be at his best, not just as a batsman but also as a leader,” he added.

Rohit Sharma’s record as captain in ICC events has been impressive. He led India to 11 wins in 13 matches across two T20 World Cups and had an almost flawless 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, with the only loss coming in the final. Now, in his first Champions Trophy as captain, he is on the verge of another title, with India set to face New Zealand in the summit clash on March 9 in Dubai.
